Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

Periodontal disease is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting almost 80% of the world’s population. It is the number one leading cause of unnecessary tooth loss in adults today. Periodontal disease is a silent disease causing no pain until it is too late. There are many symptoms that we look for on all of your check-up appointments.

From the early stages of bleeding gums (gingivitis), recession of your gums, to early bone loss and weakening of the support of your teeth you may not be aware of the infection happening in your mouth. As the gums and bone are the foundations for your teeth and smile, it is very important to ensure that your gums are healthy so your teeth and smile stay healthy. There is a growing evidence of the link between gum disease and diabetes, heart disease and low birth weight in babies.

If you have

  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath
  • Teeth sensitive to cold or sweets
  • Receding gums or exposed root surfaces

then you have gum disease

Our dental hygienists are trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and will work with you to establish a customized program to prevent or maintain your oral health.

Endodontics (Root Canal)

Most of the bad reputation of root canal is from the toothache or abscess you have before you get to the office. Root canal treatment can save many teeth from being removed and allow you to use them for a long time. Modern methods of treatment are convenient, comfortable and have a high success rate

TMJ (Jaw Joint Pain)

The TMJ is the Temporal Mandibular Joint, the joint that connects the lower jaw to your upper jaw and skull. It is a complex joint and unique joint in the body because of the many types of motion it has. There are many muscles and ligaments that move the joint every time we talk, eat or swallow.

When the jaw joint or associated muscles and ligaments become painful, the condition is known as TMD or Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction

There are a number of symptoms associated with TMD including:

  • Headaches (they are one of the most common complaints of TMD)
  • Clicking, popping or grating noises in the jaw joint
  • Sore muscles in the temples or face
  • Unable to open wide or locking of the jaw
  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Ear aches, ringing in the ears with no ear infections or medical condition

There are a number of factors that make a person more prone to TMD problems.

  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Bad bites (deep overbite, crowding or crooked teeth)
  • Missing teeth (especially back molars)
  • Previous injuries to the jaw (car accidents, sports injuries)

We will do a TMJ screening exam for you at your check up appointments. If you have TMJ Dysfunction, we will discuss with you an extended examination and the treatment options.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring is no joke: Thousands of Canadians have sleep apnea and don’t know it. While snoring may be considered a source of jokes and laughter for the person who does snore, for their bed partner, it is not a humorous matter. The disrupted sleep of the non-snoring partner is very frustrating with disturbed sleep and can lead to marital discord. However for the person who is snoring, they may have a very serious life-threatening condition know as Sleep Apnea.

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that causes a person to stop breathing repeatedly while they sleep. These periods of non-breathing can last from 20 seconds up to 2 minutes and can happen many times per hour. The most common type of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea, when the upper airway in the throat becomes blocked while asleep. We spend 1/3 of our life sleeping, and good sleep is crucial for our health and well being. We simply cannot live without sleep. Without sleep, our whole body cannot function normally throughout the day.

The problems associated with sleep apnea are

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart Arrythmias
  • Increased risk of strokes and heart attacks
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Increased risk of car accidents or work place accidents
  • Loss of memory and confusion
  • Irritability
  • Depression

While snoring and sleep apnea are medical conditions, there may be a dental solution to both. With a medical consultation and a referral from a medical doctor, we may have a dental solution

or your snoring and/or sleep apnea. If you are a candidate we can make an intra oral appliance to help keep your airway open and reduce snoring and sleep apnea.
